'To the river's end' is a body of work which documents the course of the River Blyth in East Suffolk, from its source near the village of Laxfield to the tidal estuary between Southwold and Walberswick on the North Sea coast.
In January 2022, the Environmental Audit Committee published a report into the state of English rivers. It stated that, for the first time, every single river in England failed tests for chemical contamination and just 14% met good ecological standard. The devastating impact on humans, wildlife and the natural environment from these levels of contamination means urgent action is needed to improve water quality.
The series was shot from dawn to dusk on a single day, focusing on six locations along the river's course. At each location, I took photographs of the river and surrounding landscape, and collected small samples of water to record the pollutants in a tangible form.
